Shrooming on HBO's Entourage

Not to be outdone by other hipper programs, the writers for HBO's Entourage (a guilty pleasure) will be including this gem in the new fall season:

The boys trek to Mexico and Joshua Tree National Park, where they’ll eat some psychedelic mushrooms and try to find themselves. It’s one of my favorite episodes. It’s their Into the Wild trip.

I find this personally interesting because in my college years I had the opportunity to go to Joshua Tree tripping on shrooms many times. My most significant Joshua Tree trip revelation: Water is Life!

Stolen dope? Don't call the cops

Here's a rare example of stupid crime prevention, when stupid crime is compounded by a misguided attempt to bring law enforcement into the scene:

An Australian man's complaint of an break-in at his home went to pot Friday when police arrested him for growing marijuana.

The 35-year-old man in the central Australian city of Adelaide called police to report that six men had broken into his house through a window and stolen parts of his cannabis plants, South Australia Police said.

Police were unable to find the intruders but brought a drug warrant to search the home, where they found six large cannabis plants growing in two bedrooms, police said in a statement.

The man was charged with cultivating cannabis for sale.

I'm sure this man's senes of injustice is well founded, but let this be a lesson to you. If someone steals your pot, your meth lab, your blotter, your illegal cane toad, or anything else you wouldn't want the police to find, please take the law into your own hands. It's for the best.

Philip Morris is such a great guy!

Chain smokers of the world rejoice! Our good friend Phil has finally come to lend our wheezing, phlegm spitting asses a hand with the help of some crafty bioengineers:

The Philip Morris-funded North Carolina State researchers say the work could lead to less cancer-causing chewing tobacco. In large-scale field trials, they compared the levels of N-nitrosonornicotine, a chemical known as NNN, between GM tobacco plants and a control group. They found a six-fold decrease in NNN and a 50 percent overall drop in a whole class of nasty substances known as tobacco-specific nitrosamines.

Thank goodness this whole cancer problem is finally being addressed. Now make me tobacco with no tar that produces smokeable oxiracetam and idebenone and i'll be REALLY happy.

The Love (4-hour all-ambient massive mix)

Of the 40 or so mixes I've made available online, this one is BY FAR my most-requested for download. It being all ambient (and mostly beatless except for just a couple of instances of light organic downtempo), it seems to be very popular among people who are not into electronic dance music. Here is the tracklisting and download link:

Where to run away from skinheads when you're high

Another video from the gulfs of my memory and again even a Viva recording, just like I have seen it. The music is terrible - compared to THIS, DJ Quicksilver is a sophisticated artist - but the lyrics are funny and the video is just hilarious.

"I Wanna Be A Hippy" by (nomen omen) Technohead, presenting a hippie running away from three furious skinheads. I guess they just envy him his state of mind...

Doctor Who on LSD

Back before the first season of the original Doctor Who aired on the BBC, the producers had some pretty crazy ideas about what direction to take the show, including this one which appeared in 44-year-old production meeting notes:

"The metaphysical change which takes place over 500 years or so is a horrifying experience ... in which he relives some of the unendurable moments of his long life.

"It's as if he has had the LSD drug and instead of experiencing the kicks, he has the hell and dank horror which can be its effect."

Wait a minute... people are getting "kicks" out of LSD? I thought "hell and dank horror" was the whole point.

Ecstasy hits women harder

This doesn't seem too surprising:

Women who take ecstasy get a more euphoric drug high than men and suffer a much harder comedown in the days after, an Australian review has found....

The findings from three lab studies of ecstasy users overseas suggest that women respond more strongly, with more and stronger hallucinations and euphoric feelings, she said.

In the days after they have a lower mood then men, with biological studies suggesting females may also be hit harder by the longer-term negative effects of the drug.

Clearly these women are getting much better ecstasy than I am if they are experiencing hallucinations at all. Regardless, this seems almost common sense at this point, but I suppose it's good to see empirical data backing up widespread anecdotal folk wisdom.
