Philip Morris is such a great guy!

Chain smokers of the world rejoice! Our good friend Phil has finally come to lend our wheezing, phlegm spitting asses a hand with the help of some crafty bioengineers:

The Philip Morris-funded North Carolina State researchers say the work could lead to less cancer-causing chewing tobacco. In large-scale field trials, they compared the levels of N-nitrosonornicotine, a chemical known as NNN, between GM tobacco plants and a control group. They found a six-fold decrease in NNN and a 50 percent overall drop in a whole class of nasty substances known as tobacco-specific nitrosamines.

Thank goodness this whole cancer problem is finally being addressed. Now make me tobacco with no tar that produces smokeable oxiracetam and idebenone and i'll be REALLY happy.

While cool, this is of little benefit to smokers.

Great, I wonder how much this would reduce the heart disease, emphysema and other smoking related illnesses.

Just to reiterate, the only possible good that can come of GMOs is if the modification leads to something like an Ent, or a triffid, so that plants are able to prevent themselves being chopped down and mutilated by idiots.

I await patiently the day when plants evolve to growing faster and develop some sort of motile root system that enables rainforests to reappear overnight.
