Portugal drug decriminalization works

It has now been ten years since Portugal's experiment to decriminalize drugs, and the results are in.

Health experts in Portugal said Friday that Portugal's decision 10 years ago to decriminalise drug use and treat addicts rather than punishing them is an experiment that has worked.

"There is no doubt that the phenomenon of addiction is in decline in Portugal," said Joao Goulao, President of the Institute of Drugs and Drugs Addiction, a press conference to mark the 10th anniversary of the law.

The number of addicts considered "problematic" -- those who repeatedly use "hard" drugs and intravenous users -- had fallen by half since the early 1990s, when the figure was estimated at around 100,000 people, Goulao said.

Thanks shroomling!

"Yeah!! Capitalism!!!"

That's funny. I thought Portugal was a capitalist country, too. I guess they went Communist or Socialist without telling us?

I guess they didn't well Wikipedia either:

"Since the 1990s, Portugal's economic development model has been slowly changing from one based on public consumption to one focused on exports, private investment, and development of the high-tech sector."

I always thought "private investment" was just a polite way of saying "capitalism."

I'm sorry, but you're going to have to shout when you read this.

Law enforcement community, corrections, the DEA, the FBI, and other interested parties can't hear you over the Shit-Ton of money they make on the criminalization of these drugs.

"I can't hear you and your common sense bullshit! I'm too busy loading my gun with gold bullets and swimming in my champagne hot-tub paid for by the taxpayer!! I'm going to punch my wife in her ovary, because I'm rich, muhfucka! Yeah!! Capitalism!!!"
