Prescription drug shortages

Everybody wants drugs, but there are only so many to go around. Popular drugs and less profitable drugs often fall into short supply. Pharmacists scramble to meet demand.

Certain antibiotics, high blood pressure medicine and muscle relaxants are all among the commonly prescribed medications that are in short supply or no longer available.

The latest is a shortage of the generic form of Adderall XR, used for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children and adults.

Even more worrisome are shortages of injected drugs used for cancer treatment, anesthesia during surgeries and other life-saving functions.

The reason Adderall XR is in short supply is the DEA. They have a hard cap on the amounts of certain drugs, both the amount that can be produced and the amount that can be imported. All the domestic manufacturers have to work within this upper limit, and have a quota they can't exceed.

Short supply, high demand = higher prices

There's no shortage of Adderal! Everybody I know has a prescription, and plenty to share!

... wait a minute.
