Cocaine at dinner parties: Pro or Con?

Believe it or not, this is an issue of concern.

Cocaine's reputation as a safe drug at middle-class dinner parties is to be examined by the Government's drugs advisers.

Professor Les Iversen said the year-long review will look at the harms posed by the growing popularity of cocaine, but added there are no plans to consider changing its illegal class A status.

The review follows concerns over a three-fold rise in the number of cocaine users over the last 10 years and "a popular misconception, at least as far as powder cocaine is concerned at middle-class dinner parties, (that) it's a safe drug", Prof Iversen said.

"We want to examine the pharmacology in detail and see whether or not powder cocaine really is safe," he said. "I don't believe it."

Oh I don't know, maybe they'll discover that the vast majority of users are recreational who moderate their use and experience relatively few problems, and suggest that it be downgraded to B or C status.

Not bloody likely of course, but one can dream.

Ummm....yeah. I don't know about you, but nothing whets my appetite like a nice, fat rail... ;)

What's the point of this review? It's already in the top tier of drug classification based on a so-called hierarchy of harms, and – as Iversen makes plain – you can be sure they won't be downgrading it.

And whether he believes it or not is a moot point, he's supposed to be a scientist.

People who care about evidence-based harms of drugs should take no notice of this so-called scientific body – because a real one exists: it's called the Independent Scientific Committee on Drugs, and you can find it at [link]

Cocaine Bear must be the graphic used for all cocaine-related stories.

Make a note of it.

I remember having cocaine at dinner parties - but without the dinner...
