PsypressUK Interview with James Kent

Talking about 'Psychedelic Information Theory', early influences, and the role of humans in information complexity.

How did you first become interested in psychedelics and what was it about them that made you wish to research and study them?

JK: I have always been fascinated with strange features of the brain, and in college I began studying philosophy, religion and mysticism, and was very interested in Gnosis and methods of transcendence. I certainly knew what psychedelics were, but was not really interested in them until a friend mentioned that LSD was said to produce mystical states. I had not previously made the connection between psychedelics and mysticism, but a quick trip to the library, spending a few hours skimming through works by Huxley, Leary and Hofmann, made me realize there were aspects of the mind still beyond common explanation. My initial interest was ignited by the curiosity to have that ineffable mystical experience first-hand. I wanted to see if it was as strange and wonderful as advertised.

Great interview James, one of the very best I've ever read. You're really digging deep into rich territory that's intellectual and scientific, yet also on the way towards pragmatic benefits, by drawing up the blueprints behind shamanism, and describing psychedelics with new language.

McKenna liked to say that the way to change reality is to change the codes and language we use to describe it. If you can't do this to the seemingly ineffable mystical/ecstatic experience of hyperspace, then you can't bring anything back!

So, you're doing great work, pushing the discussion into novelty territory! I read your book and was very pleased. I even obtained Zoe7's books that you mention, and see the beginnings of putting your theories to the test with some modern day technoshamanic entrainment techniques and also that CranioElectro Stimulation device. Zoe7 seems to use them to retain memory and drive the experience in general. I've experimented a bit with the Procion AVS, but need to find some better tracks, or start making my own binaural beats.

My latest addition is a home made vibroacoustic bed, with 4 excellent sounding speakers around it. It feelsl like you're floating with the right vibes underneath. I think there's some really rich work to be done in designing psychedelic audiovisual environments like this, and I hope to use theories like yours to fine tune the experiences one might have.

If you find any good literature on DJs using entrainment theories to create particular states or experiences, I'd be very interested.

Take care!
