TIME: The Link Between Marijuana and Schizophrenia

From TIME magazine:

Since the days of Reefer Madness, scientists have sought to understand the complex connection between marijuana and psychosis. Cannabis can cause short-term psychotic experiences, such as hallucinations and paranoia, even in healthy people, but researchers have also long noted a link between marijuana use and the chronic psychotic disorder, schizophrenia.

Repeatedly, studies have found that people with schizophrenia are about twice as likely to smoke pot as those who are unaffected. Conversely, data suggest that those who smoke cannabis are twice as likely to develop schizophrenia as nonsmokers. One widely publicized 2007 review of the research even concluded that trying marijuana just once was associated with a 40% increase in risk of schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders.

But here's the conundrum: while marijuana went from being a secret shared by a small community of hepcats and beatniks in the 1940s and '50s to a rite of passage for some 70% of youth by the turn of the century, rates of schizophrenia in the U.S. have remained flat, or possibly declined. For as long as it has been tracked, schizophrenia has been found to affect about 1% of the population.

If I had Schizophernia I would want to smoke weed too.

The article says that schizophrenics may just enjoy cannabis more than most people. In one survey, "All participants, not surprisingly, reported feeling happier when they were high, but the mood-lifting effect of marijuana was stronger among smokers with schizophrenia." People with schizophrenia also use way more nicotine than average, but that is usually explained as "self-medication" or something.

Schizophrenia is not a medical condition, but a psychological "failure" to cope with reality, or rather to adapt to what other people call reality. But of course it would be so convenient to finally find the Schizo gene ...

I'm schizophrenic from pot when I'm on it when I hear the phrase pot head uttered I'm the only one who thinks of a piece of cooking wear on a head. Same goes for when I get swinging on it with pan sexuals!

yeah, hey brenda, start thinking for yourself and believing less of what you see on fox news. There is an undeniable link between the brain functioning of schizophrenics and those who use marijuana. Both have been found to change the way one's brain works, create abnormal processes of thought, and alter the way one views reality in general. Smoking weed quite obviously does not cause schizophrenia, it's simply a strong correlation.

No conundrum at all!

If marijuana use has gone up, and schizophrenia rates remain flat, then marijuana is not causing schizophrenia. Since schizophrenics use marijuana at twice the rate of healthy people, then the only conclusion should be that schizophrenia causes marijuana use, and not vice versa.

In other words, schizophrenics like marijuana for some reason. Could be it damps down their symptoms, or has an interesting effect that only schizophrenics can appreciate.
