Venus and Mars 'high on drugs'

Boticelli's Venus and Mars has long been regarded as a tribute to the "conquering and civilising power of love" but new evidence suggests it could contain a subversive message about drug use.

A plant being held by a mischievous-looking satyr in the bottom right corner of the painting has been recognised as a specimen of Datura stramonium, a plant which causes madness and the urge to take one's clothes off.

The fruit, the effects of which are documented in Ancient Greek texts, had not been thought important until it was noticed by David Bellingham, a programme director at Sotheby's Institute of Art.

He showed the painting to horticulturalists at Kew Gardens who identified the plant, which is also called thorn apple and Devil's trumpet.

Okay, I took a close look at the painting. No trumpet flowers, no spiky seed pods. How are we to know it is supposed to be Datura? Here is a close-up of the little guy, it doesn't look like he is holding anything resembling Datura. What?

The little satyr definitely appears to be holding the thorned apple of the datura plant, and those leaves look to me like early leaves forming around a young datura bloom. I just ordered one of these plants, and can say with sincerity that that is what the young leaves look like.

It definitely looks like Mars and Venus are blitzed as hell here, but I'm pretty sure Mr. Bellingham just has a strange fascination with Datura and is seeing it where its not.

The oval isn't even attached to the plant, This guy is full of himself

The green thing he's holding is too big to be a pod. The plant in the corner definitely isn't Datura.

That is not a Datura stramonium plant at all. Look at the leaves. The people at Kew Gardens should explain this...

That little round thing in the satyr's hand looks metallic, like part of the armor around his shoulder, it is hard to say what it is, but more importantly, what is that pipe thing hanging off the stoned guy's finger?

how about that plant right by his elbow?
Brandon : 2010-05-27 13:00:03
I don't see datura

I'm no datura expert or botanist, but maybe that's the plant in the lower right hand corner? In the close-up, the little horned shit seems to be holding something that possibly could be a seed pod in his left hand.
