CA: Assembly committee OKs bill to legalize marijuana

A proposal to legalize and tax marijuana in California was approved by a key committee of the Assembly this morning, over the dire warnings of police chiefs and prosecutors.

The Public Safety Committee voted 4-3 to approve AB 390 by Assemblyman Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco), who said the bill would provide tax revenue to the state and regulation of the drug. The new law includes a requirement that users be at least 21 years old.

The measure next goes to the Health Committee, but proponents worried it would not be acted on by that panel by Friday's deadline, which would require the proposal to be reintroduced to be heard this year by the full Assembly.

Different states have different laws. Some would let it be sold in liquor stores, some in separate shops. I wouldn't hold your breath on the testing, but the regulations are bound to even out with alcohol in all aspects.

The thing is, the legislatures are pinned down financially, and they see cannabis legalization as their last resort. No one wants to be the first to do it. They want someone else to do it so they can just watch those statistics change for 6-8 months. They want hard evidence to point to when passing these bills. At the hearing I went to, they were most interested in Portugal's recent posession laws change.

Great news! Does anybody know when we will be able to buy weed at the liquor store? Also, will they be raising the level of nanograms allowed per ml. of THC metabolites in the blood and urine anytime soon?
