Mexican drug kingpin taken down in 'Scarface' style shoot-out

The Mexican government is claiming an important victory against organised crime after killing a drug baron during a massive navy swoop on his hideout in the city of Cuernavaca, just south of the capital.

Arturo Beltran Leyva, who called himself the Boss of Bosses, died with six of his men inside an exclusive residential complex where he had holed up as hundreds of sailors closed in.

One sailor also died and three people were detained in the operation that began yesterday afternoon with special forces rappelling down from helicopters and carrying out door-to-door identity checks and weapons searches.

The gunfight started after dark when most residents had already been evacuated and lasted around two hours as Beltran Leyva and his bodyguards inside a second floor apartment tried to shoot their way out or fight to the death. Amid the automatic gunfire the gangsters reportedly threw at least a dozen grenades before succumbing to the navy operation.

I bet he even said, "Say hello to my little friend!" as he opened fire.

"Way to actually fix things, proud Mexican drug warriors!"

Indeed. Beyond futile, infuriatingly tragic how when the head of a cell is captured or killed, be it from an upper or lower echelon, a swarm scrambles to take the spot, willing and able to decrease their own life expectancy by forty - fifty years.

Pick any Mexican border city and check the county or state jail stats, around half of convicts are NOT local. About a third of these "out of towners" are from the state of Sinaloa.

Whenever a kidnapping ring is caught, at least a couple of members turn out to be from Sinaloa. Mind-bogglingly, some recent kidnap victims have been pre-teens, so the lack of honor, let alone morals, is reaching new and unheard of lows, although women and children have been ritually executed before. Whenever one hears or reads about narco-weddings or the like, the gauche fashions and grating music always has the Sinaloa touch.

Never the poorest state in the nation by a long shot, how did Sinaloa become such a nihilistic factory of criminality? The answer is simple: The "war" on some drugs, therefore the black market, gave these people a glimpse of what it's like to be a master of the Universe, in a putrid sort of way, through home-grown role models such as the Arellanos, Chapo Guzman and their foot soldiers, bad-ass neighborhood heroes with flash and cash. Down that slippery slope for decades, now many in the younger generations are willing to cannibalize each other, let alone others, for a bag of white powder and a bottle of Buchanan's (the narco whisky of choice).

Yes, this is an important victory! Because, you know, no one, absolutely no one will come along to replace him. All those Mexican drug lords are finally going to just wake up and say "No Way Jose! I've had it."

And peace will reign.

Way to actually fix thing, proud Mexican drug warriors!
