Student arrested for smoking joint during pro marijuana speech

A student presenting an essay at Peninsula High School in Purdy on Tuesday morning took out a marijuana joint, lit it, and began smoking it, police said.

According to Pierce County sheriff's detective Ed Troyer, the student smoked the joint during his essay supporting the legalization of marijuana.

He then finished his essay, sat down, finished smoking the joint and then ate the end after it was fully smoked.

The teacher of the class contacted the school resources officer, a Pierce County sheriff's deputy, who found a small residual amount of marijuana on the student, Troyer said.

The student, a 17-year-old junior with a 3.7 grade-point average, was arrested on charges of possession of marijuana by Pierce County deputies and booked into Remann Hall in Tacoma.

Way to go man, you know ive always wanted to do that in class. Zonkers is right ''No roach, no charges''. But then again like they say there is a time and a place to smoke, and it is not in or during school. ''LEGALlIZE IT''

Man Barry, you sure are something.
I'm glad that, like previously stated, you did such a selfless thing.

Ian, i know this is probably making some waves right now, and you may not see this, but if you do...

As a fellow student and fellow human, I wish to say; what you have do is both brave and bold! Your courage and drive are truly something. nice work dude.

Stay smart, continue becoming wise :)

my name is Ian Barry i am the student in this article. to clear things up there was no tobacco (i don't smoke that poison), i was busted for reisdual marijuana, aka 0.000013 grams they found loose in the bottom of my back pack. you can call me stupid for doing it at school or because you disagree with legalizing pot but don't criticize me for getting arrested. i knew it was going to happen, it's called civil disobediance. in our times when the federal government overrides state laws and encroaches on our freedom it's the only way to make a difference. if you want to read the essay heres the website. Ian is in my class and in my opinion his speech was impeccable. The teachers however were furious. Ian is a great guy and while it seems obvious that he was seeking attention (many of us knew he was going to toke) his points were really valid! To straighten some things out though; he never ate the joint he lit it up, toked and left. He never ran and he never did any of this weird shit that the news people posted. I'm really hoping they let this kid back. He was at the school today and everyone seemed to cheer :).. Including me :)

Wow...

It's about time junior let the 'MAN' know that he's no pretender.

Who are you!

Morrison : 2009-06-04 15:31:07
Here's a 30sec low quality clip of him smoking up while giving his speech:

Nothing about this is stupid. Everything about it is right with reason.

Prohibition will continue as long as we let them by hiding in fear. The only thing in America you're allowed to be proud of is making money, apparently.

What he did was stupid, but also right. The two need not be mutually exclusive.
hexatron. : 2009-06-04 03:02:30
re: ....

of course he knew he was going to get in trouble.
this was civil disobedience. if everyone did this, they'd have to make it legal.

Collin. : 2009-06-04 01:26:00
LOL I'm sorry but giving a pro marijuana speech then proceeding to smoke a joint in front of your teacher takes some serious balls, bravo sir.

Hopefully the charges won't stick, 3.7 GPA too not half bad for a stoner =)!

wow. : 2009-06-04 00:21:48
i am a student there at peninsula
of course he knew he was going to get in trouble, hes just standing for what he believes in...
he is one of those kids who will fight the math teacher on how to do a math problem for hours... its just his personality
right on!. : 2009-06-03 22:40:12
this kid is a hero!
.... : 2009-06-03 19:26:16
what a dumbass.
How could you expect to not get in trouble for smoking weed in school?

I'm all for legalization but there are times and places where it is inappropriate to smoke.

Kaitis . : 2009-06-03 17:13:19
This kid's a hero, but I doubt there was any tobacco in to Morrison.
zonkers. : 2009-06-03 16:32:42
Eating the roach was probably a good idea. They can arrest him but without any evidence the charges won't stick. Without evidence who can say for sure what he was smoking? No roach, no charges.
Morrison : 2009-06-03 16:12:31
Way to go!
Except the part where he ate the cigarette butt. Ingesting these oxides is very poisonous. Plus, if there was also some tobacco in his spliff there's an additional chance of nicotine poisoning. Probably wanted to impress a girl in his class.
