Dr. Jacoby: inspired by Terence McKenna?

My wife and I have been working our way through the definitive gold box edition of Twin Peaks recently; she's never seen it, and as rabid a fan as I was when it first aired, I never made it to the end of season two. (As David Lynch remarks on the box, "I think this is a great definitive Twin Peaks Gold Set...") Tonight we were looking up one of the bit players on IMDB (turns out, the voiceover lady from Desperate Housewives was in a few eps), and I stumbled over into the IMDB trivia for the show, which includes this tidbit:

Dr. Jacoby [played by Russ Tamblyn] is based on the late ethnobotanist, Terrence McKenna [sic]. Their physical appearance is strikingly similar, their dress style is similar and they are both in the liberal arts professions. Dr. Jacoby holidays in Hawaii and has a Hawaiian wife, McKenna lived in Hawaii. Dr. Jacoby has a notable mushroom shaped lamp, McKenna studied and wrote widely on psychedelic mushroom culture.

Ha! I usually assume a significant amount of bad data in IMDB's supporting info, but this was pretty hilarious, especially considering Dr. Jacoby's reduction to essentially a comic relief role in season two of the show. Of course, season two is where the show went off the tracks, but I guess that's a different discussion...

Very funny, I was just watching episode 6 and I was like, "HEY! They looks like Terence Mckenna. I wonder if they were fans or friends of eachother." And came across this.

DMT could most certainly be one of Lynch's inspirations!

i loved it the whole way. it was a while back, maybe i'd feel differently now--plus, i think so much of what was original about it has become a lot more commonplace these days. anyone who has watched LOST (or dream sequences on Sopranos, or probably a bunch of other shows i haven't seen) will be missing the 'novelty' of this series when it first aired on network TV.

can't wait to watch it again, just waiting for the right time. btw, any mckenna fans out there who haven't seen it, it's online for free at cbs.com

but i don't remember when the jacoby guy turns up.

thanks for posting, very interesting how far ahead lynch was regarding mckenna (compared to me, anyhow).

it is shitty for most of the second season, until the end. WHOA. make it to the end for sure. And remember - once in the black lodge, ALWAYS in the black lodge.

Yes! This confirms everything I've suspected up to this point regarding the connection between doctor jackoby and Terence Mckenna. Basically that there is a connection. Thanks for posting this. I can Finally sleep peacefully.

Great show, bt-dubs, until the later second season anyways.

Also - Russ Tamblyn was a bitchin dancer. He was in West Side Story and Seven Brides for Seven Brothers.
