The ECONOMIST Likes Smart Drugs

My favorite weekly news magazine, The Economist, weighs in on all the pharmaceutical goodies coming down the development pipeline:
...such drugs promise to do a lot of good. Many people already use Provigil to cope with night-shift work, jet lag and lack of sleep, and suffer few side-effects. Others use beta-blockers to overcome the anxiety and stress of performance. Scientists use off-label drugs to increase their focus. If that helps them unravel the mysteries of the universe, so much the better. If chemical assistance can help increase the useful human lifespan, the benefits could be huge.

The article is more philosophical than informative, but an excellent read nonetheless.

Valium isn't a muscle relaxant; it's a centrally acting GABA receptor agonist. Muscle relaxation is a side effect of sedation, no matter what the cause of the sedation.

By 2012 we'll all be such druggie pharma wrecks it won't matter what happens that winter. With focus comes psychosis!

Beta-blockers shouldn't just be used ad-hoc like that for anxiety; they slow the heart rate down, and if you are nervous for example then it's likely a short-term thing.
Valium is f-ing amazing as a chill pill however, and isn't dangerous like the beta-blockers can be.
Don't mess with your heart, go for a muscle relaxant; betas I'd say are best left prescribed by knowlegable doctors.

Right...whatever makes us work more hours and with more focus to produce more is just fine with them. Yeah I'm cynical.
