Your mom is totally on drugs

Scientific American seems to think it's funny that old people do drugs. So funny that they wrote a whole funny article about it:

It’s the kind of tongue-in-cheek concept that might have percolated out of the subversive imagination of R. Crumb, underground cartoon chronicler of the 1960s. Grandma and Grandpa are passing the time in their rockers—and passing a joint back and forth as they recall their youthful marijuana-smoking days in Haight-Ashbury. In fact, according to three investigators at the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the image is no joke.

Writing in the journal Neuropsychopharmacology, Gayathri J. Dowling, Susan R. B. Weiss and Timothy P. Condon warn that many aging baby boomers, long accustomed to using illicit drugs for recreation and medicinals of all kinds for treating whatever ails them, will carry their love affair with drugs into old age. Medicine is only beginning to appreciate the consequences.

All they have is this teaser on their website. I suppose if you want actual pictures of old folks swapping Oxycontins for blunts, or a recount of grandpa's latest pants-off acid freakout, you just have to go and pick up the rag.

I imagine that cannabis use will be bad news for nursing homes and insurance programs - as elderly cannabis users simply refuse to kick the bucket quite as fast as their non-cannabis using peers.

I,m 59 and still smoking hash as well gras. I smoke it pure ,cause I dont like cigarettes. I do it every day. I,m doing this for about 35 years. Well, from the time I,m in Holland. In the meantime I finished here my study(sociology) and I was working for 30 years. I never had a problem with it, nor the people I was working with. I red a lot about drugs using and the problems you kan get with it. In the first years the biggest problem was the police but after they legalized it there are no problems whatsoever. So if you come to Holland you'll see lot of older people smoking. Nothing strange about it. I think it is because the stereotype of Pot smoker don't exist anymore.

You have to wonder what kind of people are surprised to realise that old yin's also use drugs. Especially when that was the case, in the 1960s also.

I think they are bred in special labs and schooled in such a manner that they never ever mix in the outside world.

"Don't worry son. I'll take it back later and swap it for some heroin."

Not only baby boomers... it seems Hofmann continued taking LSD every few years... and everyone knows about his age.

It's nice to see an article on this. So many people think of their grandparents as their sweet, old fashion elders, when in reality many are pill popping addicts willing to trade their valuable and often hard to find goods for reacreational drugs. And we're not necessarily talking something soft like pot. I think I think I know what people are going to be asking for christmas from grandma this year.
