Argentina decriminalizes drug use

This in from the Cato blog:

This just in… A federal court in Argentina has decriminalized the personal consumption of drugs in that country. According to the court’s ruling, punishing drug users only “creates an avalanche of cases targeting consumers without climbing up in the ladder of [drug] trafficking.”

Last month at a UN meeting in Vienna, Argentina’s Minister of Justice, Aníbal Fernández, said that the policy of punishing drug consumers was a “total failure.”

Finally one piece of good news from Argentina.

Do I smell an international trend brewing? Probably not.

If people knew the basis for US MJ prohibition they would know that the US law is based on the lies, fear based propaganda & greed of WR Hurst.

I strongly suggest people investigate the deception US cannabis prohibition is based on.

i'm sorry to tell you guys, you've got it all wrong, there is an intention in the present argentine goverment to decriminalize drug use, but this hasn't been achieved yet, this article is about ONE federal court in buenos aires, there is actually a possesion case in rosario city (from where i'm writing) that made it to the supreme court, so we're kinda waiting for that
but yes i'm pretty sure we will get there REALLY soon, you know chile, uruguay and brasil have already decriminalized drug use

The diff between Mexico and Argentina is that Mexico is in the U.S. backyard and major trading partner, Argentina is at the tip of South America and is not currently infiltrated by US CIA and DEA. Not much pressure the U.S. can put on them right now.

And just like that they are officially more progressive than half of the developed world.

Mexico announced the same thing a couple years ago but then the drug-running, political crime syndicates, aka US Government, reminded Mexico that they control the world and letting the markets deal with drugs would lose them a major source of income.
Let's pray for South America's success in becoming free.

No. It means that the Bush administration will probably move in and try to blackmail them into not changing their policy. Remember Mexico?

Does this mean that Buenos Aires is going to be the next Amsterdam?
