Video: psychedelic 7-Up commercial

As long as we're examining psychedelic ads, take a look at this insane television commercial for 7-Up:

This ad was described as being "modeled on the Peter Max artwork that was literally every-freakin'-where during the early '70s, including the NYC phone books, which all featured covers by PM." Via MilkandCookies.

This looks like it was done using hand animation, photgraphic cells, live motion footage that was "pushed" or oversaturated to look like animation, and early text-graphic rendering machines that were being developed only for tv at the time (I can't remember what those machines were called, but they were thousands of dollars). That and a bunch of hand-painting film cells and tons and tons and tons of video mixing. I guess.

Pretty impressive! I wonder how exactly it was made, did they have a primitive computer or so, or just pure hand artisan genius?
