'Punctured pills'

A recent experience report posted to Erowid offered this suggestion for consuming drugs via gel capsule:

I have recently noticed that my usual process of taking gel capsules has a flaw to it. Standard gel caps appear to delay the onset of symptoms with any psychedelic by about 20-30 minutes. This was determined by comparing the timelines of a 4-AcO-DMT gel cap experience with an experience taking 4-AcO-DMT powder mixed with water and swallowed directly. Dropping a 'test capsule' into a cup of acidified water also confirms, it can take quite a while for a capsule to break open and release its powder in a stomach-like environment.

Starting with this report, whenever I use gel caps, I now puncture each capsule with a needle immediately before swallowing it. I believe ‘punctured pills’ lead to a more immediate onset, as the powder spills right out into the stomach. It works the same as parachuting without the unpleasantness of swallowing toilet paper, and it allows for more accurate time lines.

Which of course begs the question of, swallowing toilet paper wha....?

I often consume mushrooms in gelatin capsules, and I've always found the additional time necessary for the capsules to dissolve to be inconvenient. In my experience, eating dried, powdered mushrooms packed into capsules (usually 5-10 are necessary) delays the effects by about 20-60 minutes relative to mixing the powder into a drink.

I came up with this same idea, but unfortunately it wasn't very effective for me. Even if I removed the entire end caps from the capsules, so they were just half capsules, they didn't seem to kick in any faster.

Even if it doesn't work well for relatively large numbers of capsules of plant material, though, it might be more effective for one or two capsules of a pure chemical.

I'm a vegetarian, so I avoid consuming gelatine unless I really need to - for example when I need a medicine that is produced in this form. But anyway I've always had huge problems with swallowing it, maybe once or twice I managed to swallow a gelcap without having to bite it in half. I just have a very strong reflex against swallowing anything large, on an instinctive level I'm afraid I'd choke on it. Even a pill of half an inch in diameter is huge for me. When I have "these days" and have to take a mild painkiller, I always bite the pill or cut it in four pieces...

Interesting, there is always some new technique to learn. I would have imagined that dissolving the powder in juice or water or some such would avoid the type on unpleasantness described in the experience report.

by parachuting he means swallowing a crushed pill or powder wrapped in toilet paper, kleenex or other type of thin paper. supposedly this technique makes the substance hit you faster.
