Surfer dude uses E8 mandala to construct theory of everything

For those of you interested in sacred geometry and physics, a new holy grail is being presented. Meet E8, a symmetrical 248-dimensional object comprised of over 205.2 trillion polynomials, a complex shape discovered in the 19th century that some feel may be the underlying pattern of the universe. And recently, an unemployed physicist (who also surfs) named Garrett Lisi has proposed how the fundamental forces of physics (including gravity) are all represented in this structure, making it an elaborate mathematical unified-field theory. The theory is not widely accepted yet, but some think Lisi may actually be onto something here. With the help of a supercollider the missing pieces can be tested and filled in, so we'll have to wait and see on this one. But can we all say 21st century physics people? Pretty n-dimensional mandalas... Yum...

Update: I just found a blog post reviewing this paper and claiming it is junk science. You can check it here. This guy is obviously a high-energy physics geek and goes off on giving Lisi a lashing, calling him an outright crackpot.

I've been wanting to leave a response to this since it got posted, but could not really find the words for what I wanted to say. I think you pretty much wrapped it up for me, omgoleus. Especially with the line "The real mandala-makers know that their mandalas are just sand..."; I don't think I could agree with you more. Perhaps the best thing we can do is simply hold ourselves as wide open as possible, and leave room for this shifting stream of possibility that will keep flowing whether we choose to flow with it or against it...in this light, remaining open and flowing with it seems like the only true logical course of action, to me at least.

I think glimpses of the cosmic structure are a dime a dozen, and I absolutely believe that these glimpses are both accurate and potentially enriching. However, it is also quite natural for the Cartesian-programmed Western mind to come home from one of these glimpses and seek a way to put it into the words (and numbers) of its regular perspective, and end up with one or another Theory of Everything. Which, in the end, will be more Theory than Everything. The psychedelic crackpot multidimensional mandala theories may have a more accessible aesthetic than String Theory or Quantum Mechanics or whatever, but in the end they fall short in exactly the same way as the quest for the Smallest Particle... oh look, we build an accelerator ten times as big and whaddya know, we broke last year's smallest particles into even smaller ones! Which, ironically, are actually bigger than the ones they came from, because they have more energy in them and thus more mass; and doesn't this irony call the whole venture into question? And so it is with the mandalas.

The real mandala-makers know that their mandalas are just sand...

He's got the mind. THE MIND. Seeker for answers mind. Theory of everything, the roots of existance, the methods of creation. How many of your haven't at many points come to some grand understanding of the exact matrix of creation? (okay maybe its not THAT common).

But the numbers game may never reach to the understanding of what IT really is, because the numbers game is a game inside the mind, and the limits of the mind will always be some fraction lesser than the limits of the universe, even at its more evolved possible form, because one contains the other, in a sense.

I've always liked the Indra's Net theory.

Indra cast a net out into the great sea. Her net is a multidimensional matrix composed of absolute self reflecting 'orbs' or shards. Each reflecting the other. Fractal and holographic. The rest develops like smoke and mirrors, from this reflection. Mind is built like this reflection. Neronal hierachies arranging themselves to encode holohraphically and not linearly. A baseless foundation upon which knowledge is built, from memory of things experienced. Languge evolves, culture evolves, reflection of the outside world, inside, evolves.

Descartes angel that said "the univsere is to be conquored by number and measure". Behold this gem: cartesian coordinates are used in conjunction with algebra to calculate qualities and changes within qualities in multi-dimensional constructs.

All from a dream of a tired soldier one night whilst resting in Bohm, Rene Descartes.

Science devoid of art is useless.

I have absolutely no idea what Lisi or his critics are talking about, and I seriously doubt anybody else here does either.

It does look pretty, though.
