Self Medicated: Movie opens this week

'Self Medicated', a film about youth drug addiction and radical intervention has been making the rounds at the festivals for the past few years but is screening in Seattle this weekend. After watching the trailer I get the feeling that this might be a little hokey, but that it could also be another 'Traffic', in that it sheds light on drug use in a way never seen on film before. I don't know, you decide...

This film is a searing endictment of these corrupt and absusive facilities. In fact, the filmmmaker made this film, in part, to expose the abuses that take place in these programs. By the time the movie ends, you would never dream of sending yuor child to a place like the one depicted in the film. It's an excellent film, by the way.

Well, from what I've heard it portrays these sorts of institutions in a poor light: the official synopsis describes the facility as 'a locked-down and corrupt psychiatric hospital'.

That said, I did see this comment on IMDb:

"But by the end of the film, the message is clear: the best solution for somebody who's been neglected his whole life is to be torn down and rebuilt to the specifications of an institution.

Which, of course, many ignorant viewers will agree with, after soaking up the propoganda. Everybody at my school who saw the film did."

So you might well be able to read the movie as an endorsement of such programmes.

Looks like a movie that makes those camps look like good places to send your kids, which is the total and complete opposite of everything I've heard about them.
