Cigarettes vs. air pollution

Here's an exciting development: the harmful effects of cigarette smoke might actually be mirrored by the harmful effects of, uh, breathing air:

A previously unrecognized group of air pollutants could have effects remarkably similar to harmful substances found in tobacco smoke, Louisiana scientists are reporting in a study scheduled for presentation today at the 236th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society. Inhaling those pollutants exposes the average person up to 300 times more free radicals daily than from smoking one cigarette, they added.

The discovery could help explain the long-standing medical mystery of why non-smokers develop tobacco-related diseases like lung cancer, said H. Barry Dellinger, Ph.D., the Patrick F. Taylor Chair of Environmental Chemistry at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge.

"Free radicals from tobacco smoke have long been suspected of having extremely harmful effects on the body," Dellinger said. "Based on our work, we now know that free radicals similar to those in cigarettes are also found in airborne fine particles and potentially can cause many of the same life-threatening conditions. This is a staggering, but not unbelievable result, when one considers all of diseases in the world that cannot currently be attributed to a specific origin."

In other words - smoke 'em while you got 'em!

The air pollution emitted by cigarettes is 10 times greater than diesel car exhaust. The exhaust fumes from a modern car engine, fueled with low-sulphur diesel, and in cigarette smoke. Three smoldering cigarettes produced a 10-fold increase in air particles compared to those produced by the idling vehicle. It is very bad because we smock cigarette it not only effect our health but also our environment. We should leave natural resources for our next generation. [link]

Yeah, this is just confirmation of what ive always expected.
Its just good ol' common sense... especially to anyone thats had to live on a 2nd floor above a busy State Route or city street.
I used to wake up with headaches from the diesel fumes that were convieniently directed at my open windows for 3 years.
Thats why i laughed at the smoking ban in public buildings, it just is not going to make a difference because the air we breathe is getting pretty well fucked everywhere... kinda like the oceans and lakes...

Oh come on, like anyone didn't know that there's umpteen other just as bad as the 300 additives they add to tobacco pollutants in many areas.

Duh, if you add pollutants to anything and then ingest it, or if you add them to the soil, the plants, the water, the air - of course it's going to be bad for your health!
