Update: Marijuana legalization No. 1 at Obama's Change.gov

Our readers have already picked this up in the comments to the original post, but I thought a front page update wasn't a bad idea either. Here's the official Change.gov response to the question re marijuana legalization, which rocketed to the top of the list of submissions:

Q: "Will you consider legalizing marijuana so that the government can regulate it, tax it, put age limits on it, and create millions of new jobs and create a billion dollar industry right here in the U.S.?" S. Man, Denton

A: President-elect Obama is not in favor of the legalization of marijuana.

There you have it! As reader Emu noted:

It's very interesting to note how lengthy his responses were for all the other questions he answered but put up a 'I don't want to touch it' wall with marijuana. I'll leave you with a quote from his book,

"And if the high didn't solve whatever it was that was getting you down, it could at least help you laugh at the world's ongoing folly and see through all the hypocrisy and bullshit and cheap moralism."

In other news, Barack Obama has also failed to stop global warming, feed the world's hungry, and prevent that new Guns 'N Roses record from coming out. The shame!

legalize it.
simple as that.
Illogical. : 2010-07-26 11:29:24
You know people who want this drug legal hardly take any action because there afraid of what people think of them or just lazy or busy. We need more pot rallies accross America and espicially have one in D.C. I know there's a few marijuana rallies out there but there like once a year on 420. I say any drug that has a national holiday should be legal. Marijuana will help people give up tobbacco and possibly alcohol if your an addict. Seriously though we arrest thousands of people each year along with killings in violent drug wars against cartels and gangs. They figured that the war on alcohol was a failure sooner or later they will wake up about marijuana. Thousands of studies have been tested and what are we waiting for? Marijuana even has medicinal purposes for people who don't eat and are in serious pain.
Trevor. : 2009-12-11 13:44:09
makes no sense at all. this isn't a war on drugs its a war on personal choice and im fucking sick of it. at least obama made the decision to fuck off and leave the medical marijuana states alone but doesn't have the balls to just let out the truth. the fucker said he inhaled frequently and that was the point. like right there is proof that he liked it. The drug prohibition is causing more harm than the drug itself. it creates the criminal black market that you wouldn't have if you would just regulate it and generate billions of tax revenue. i cant wait til all the old fuckers die in office. once the youth comes into play we're gonna see a change in america for once
j0HN_CHR0NiClly_ill. : 2009-11-24 13:09:52
fuckin obama!! i swear, the only fuckin reason why i voted for this man was that he can legalize pot. nd what does he do?...he fuckin keeps abortion goin nd lets marijuana stay illegal..
thats plain dumb. abortion is killing. marijuana doesnt kill its a fuckin plant. obama, you should legalize it, not only is it used as a medical substance, but it would make the world a better place! _\|/_
MM. : 2009-07-31 04:41:21
If he would grow a pair and just tell the truth on the way he feels he would go down as one of the best presidents ever
come on like he didnt like it when he did it bullshit
its just a fuckin plant
it doesnt kill does it??
SupporterOf420. : 2009-03-21 12:07:59
ANNUAL AMERICAN DEATHS RESULTING FROM:
..................................................................
ALCOHOL....................................................400,000
TOBACCO...................................................100,000
ALL LEGAL DRUGS.......................................20,000
ALL ILLEGAL DRUGS....................................15,000
CAFFEINE...................................................2,000
ASPIRIN....................................................500
CANNABIS.................................................0

First of all, look at those numbers. Legal drugs in america have caused even more deaths than illegal drugs like cocane and heroine. The drugs that Harvard doctors write perscriptions too have killed 20,000 times the number of people than weed has. i agree 1000% with CHRONIC LOVER. not all stoners are lazy peices of useless shit like the adulthood of america has come to think of them. its bull shit and im sick and tierd of every single adult stereo typing kids in this country for smoking Marijuana when it is basically completely harmless to a person. Ive been wondering why alcohol is legal in this country when more than half of all car accidents in this country are related to drunk driving and then why weed isnt legal and there are almost no reported accidents involving it. It doesnt make sense. Also When is the government going to actually turn this country around like president bush and obama have claimed to do so? by legalizing Marijuana it will give us a huge boost to getting a jump start out of this multi trillion dollar debt we are in right now.

LEGALIZE THIS PLANT

LETS FREE THIS NATION!!!

jrgong. : 2009-01-22 12:14:37
Legalize Marijuana!!!!!!!
It needs to be the number 1 issue
I don't care what the government does as long as they let us smoke the herb!
Richard. : 2009-01-07 08:55:40
its time ta legalize the weed....! its not a drug... i can go ta wal-mart and get N.O.S. and get high as hell off it, but i dont want to. marijuana is my thing. i hate alcohol. it kills and it stupid!
Anonymous. : 2008-12-19 08:55:26
"How so? 80%+ of voters nationwide now support medical marijuana. 65-70% support decrim."
But very few support legalization. Whenever the issue comes up in referendums it is voted down, usually by wide margins.

The question concerned legalization, not decriminalization.

j. : 2008-12-18 22:37:14
by the way dosenation kicks ass.read it everyday.i remember the first one i saw on here....it was that singing x pill.loved that one.
j. : 2008-12-18 22:20:36
why does it have to be legalized?i've been smoking for years, not one president has stopped my high yet.why does anyone want the government to make more money than they already do?new boss is same as the old boss.it's not too hard to buy it and get away with it now.is it?if you get sick and need pot to help make you better, find a drug dealer...they got lots.and if you find a good dealer i'm sure it's free of arsenic, fingernails and flouride that the government would put in it if they had control of the product....forget the government, when was the last time that they actually served the people anyways?if they step on your rights aim for the brain.
jebus. : 2008-12-18 21:12:08
yes im 16 why wont the goverment just let us smoke down like a frate train. i mean if you think about it crack heads still shit. crack heads ussuallys die in a couple years if they dont get help . hariwin if thats how you spell it you can die your first ime doing it . cocaine is a very addivtive drug and your heart can explode and you can die. marijuana well thats a whole new story. you smoke as much weed as you want you cant overdoes. W***THEF**K LEGALIZATION OF MARIJUANA
john davy. : 2008-12-18 12:06:43
you people need to realize its time for us the us citizens need to do something about these probles back in the day people use to protest all the time and it got alot acomplished insted of bitching about everything or blaming everyone and everything else around us thats why we are in the economy situation people need weed as bob marly said it reveals you to your self so everybody that reeds this go sit down smoke some bud realize that reality of any situation your have and i garentee you will come up with an answer to your problem people need to stop worrying bout that social standards and the bull shit that govenment says about pot and start doing things for yourself and forget what people think about you because if you are doing something you like that aint hurting any one else and some one has a problem with it then fuck that person because i bet they cant give you one reason weed is bad based on facts they know they will only tell you opinions
dreamdust. : 2008-12-18 11:22:53
I agree Mike Cann. The biggest thing hindering reform is that people won't come out about it. Getting people to sign petitions myself, that was the single biggest reason people wouldn't sign. They were somehow afraid of what people would do if they found out they smoked Cannabis. The social stigma is the last barrier.
Mike Cann. : 2008-12-18 05:43:22
"I think his answer was appropriate..... Any other would be political suicide!"

How so? 80%+ of voters nationwide now support medical marijuana. 65-70% support decrim. Look up CNN/Time Magazine 2002 nationwide poll. All the polls since 2000, show we have suddenly become pretty much the only thing that most Americans can agree on. The war on marijuana users is political suicide. Exactly why Obama's team did not use the typical reefer madness as an excuse. They know it will kill his credibility and count on people to think that it is political suicide. It's not. The only ones that will be upset are the police, prison guards, corporations. Most politicians I talk to (and I do talk to them often about this) now realize that the public wants cannabis reform, they just don't want to make a stand because of the money on the other side. They tell me that if voters ask for it more vocally, it gives them the backing to tell the prison industrial system to back off on cannabis. Most politicians wish the whole issue would go away. Don't let them off the hook, demand it. It's not political suicide for President Obama to call a press conference on medical marijuana with say Montel Williams. It would make him an American hero just like Willie Nelson is.

Mike Cann. : 2008-12-18 05:34:14
"I agree that politically this is a political third rail. A politician can only do what is politically possible, that's why drug law reform is the responsibility of the grassroots. The cynicism here at dosenation might just help. Like maybe one person. I mean are we just preaching to the choir? I want change now, dammit."

Not to criticize but to refocus you, my man. We can win this. It's no longer a third rail but for politicians to be against us. 80% of American voters support medical marijuana. 65%+ support full decrim. Even full legalization is edging towards a full majority of voters. We have won, this is a huge change from 25 years ago. Preaching to the choir, nothing wrong with that, especially when it is to get people to get off their duffs. To many of us for to long have done nothing. The best work in my life has been in regards to marijuana reform. It's empowering. If you haven't done it, do it now. Join NORML and especially your local branches. If you don't have a local branch near you, start one. NORML.Org has the locals listed and how to start one if there isn't one already. Energizing the base and the choir to go out and tell their friends and family/state reps, etc. is what helps the most.

If you are a professional like me and somebody that has hidden it, now is the time to come out of the closet. I know much of my circle supports it because they look at me and say, "I don't want to see Mike arrested when he gives back so much and is a responsible adult." Lead by example and be vocal. Brandon, I hope you are already working towards cannabis reform or will do so in the near future. Most rewarding experience of my life. The people I have met and become friends with. They inspire me to do more and I do the same for them.

Mike Cann. : 2008-12-18 05:25:53
Keep asking him. We have large numbers of supporters. The majority of Americans and voters want to see the war on marijuana users come to an end.

One poster here said not enough that use cannabis work to get the laws changed. I agree with that.

I am one of the few that is vocal, active and I have had great results. We just decriminalized in MA. Jan. 2nd, 2009, no longer will people be arrested in MA for less than an ounce.

Keep asking for it, people. We've won, whether you know it or not. 25 years ago, not even half of voters supported medical marijuana, now according to 2002 CNN/Time Magazine and many other polls, we have 80%+ voter support. Same thing has happened with decrim/legalization. It is widly popular, more popular than any other issue in America!

Gay rights it seemed got further with less supporters? Why? Because more of them, especially the successful professional types were vocal about it. Be vocal and keep asking them for it. It will happen in my lifetime. It already is.

The one sentence with no reefer madness reasoning attached proves me right. They know it's the right thing to do, they can't even present the smoke screen reefer madness anymore without losing credibility. We will win this.

i think personally that if marijuana was legalized, that we can possibly get out of debt from world war 2, make the country a happier place, use what knowledge we know about marijuana to influence new ideas, help others in the country with anger issues, most medical reasons, and provide fuel, clothing, ROPE, and anything and everything else. its not like we marijuana smokers are all bad, want to commit crimes, kill people, lie, cheat, and steal. we can roll a joint or a blunt and smoke half and start building shit we never thought of before. why cant they just roll 20 ciggaweeds stick them in a cardboard box with a flip top or a soft pack and sell them for 19.99 and tax it so it comes to about 21.19 for a pack that should last for bout a month. then just slap the 18 age limit on it duh. i know all of us smokers have played games straight and then high and we some how some way got better at it. so what does that tell you guys, wake the f*** up and smell the greens around yall. life is to short to be wasting it not high findin out new things every day becoming better as a country not only as individuals. as for all you lazy potheads hit the j pipe blunt bong gravity bong hookah aluminum foil pipe{for those who got some shit confinscated and as a last resort for now} popcans apples or whatever you can smoke out of and get out there and prove that we aint lazy get a job support your families kids what ever and our habit and BE PRODUCTIVE LETS PROVE THAT POT AINT ALL THAT BAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND AS FAR AS THE WAR ON DRUG MARIJUANA IS A HERB A PLANT THAT GOD PUT ON THIS EARTH. I WISH I WAS THE ONE TO GET THE BIG ASS PAY CHECK FOR ALL THAT WAR AND DRUG STUFF. BUT YEAH HE SHOULDNT RIGHT AWAY TRY TO LEGALIZE IT JUST YET IT WOULD BE KINDA WIERD I SAY ABOUT JULY OR DECEMBER OF 2009
rob87. : 2008-12-18 01:33:47
i dont think enough people try to help the legalization of pot all you hear is talk about how it should happen but how many people act upon it?dont get me wronge there may be alot but not enough.not enough of the right people have the idea in there head im sure if more people acted upon the idea it might happen
NAH. : 2008-12-17 19:25:53
How would that be political suicide?? The guy just got elected President. Plus, he's gonna be out of office in 4 years anyway after he totally fucks our economy in the ass. The sooner people realize that Obama is just more of the same the better..

Except for 273h56O, I whish I could get my hands on some of that shit. Oh wait, I just might get it if I buy some 'spice'. But then again, I might get the 5-ht-333x-666 in my spice... and that sheet always makes the lsd crystals in my back tickle. Oh well

People should vote in politicians who voice their support for ending prohibition. Obama was never going to do a damn thing about it, and probably never will. He's a democrat. The democrats are against drug reform.

Nothing will change unless people stop voting for idiot democrats and republicans.

That quote from his book is disgusting. What a two-timing loser just like Bush. The only thing that makes him a leader is the fact that everyone buys into his advertising PR empire.

Ziggy. : 2008-12-17 13:52:41
You know, that answser smacks at denial. And everyone knows that is the first in a series of steps.
jamesk : 2008-12-17 11:46:56
From what I can tell Obama's personal view of marijuana is not all bad, and he understands that people are being put in jail for the wrong reasons, and that there is tax revenue to be made by legalizing it. However, as the first African American president he cannot roll into the White House and start talking about legalizing drugs. It would be a huge distraction from all the other things the president should be worried about at this point, and it would immediately put him on the defensive from attacks from the right, making him ineffective as a leader. I personally think he should let the states battle it out in medical and decriminalization referendums, and then wait until his second term to even consider the subject, and then maybe only under the cover of some kind of "World Referendum on Drugs" that makes a strong international policy case for whatever small change he might propose, so as not to miff his own constituents and other world leaders. He ain't no dummy.
z. : 2008-12-17 09:38:10
in the next round of questions, it's our duty to ask him again.

we also have to keep in mind that most probably it wasn't him who answered the questions, but someone from his "transition team".

Which is why we have to keep bugging them, sparking debate et pulling answers with questions that require more than a yes or no..

Illogic. : 2008-12-17 05:28:12
Could he at least do something about the so called "war on drugs"?
