Just in case you'd forgotten about the impending apocalypse in 2012 (as clearly depicted in the Mayan sacred calendar pictured above), the New York Times Magazine has an in depth review of all the players on the 2012 scene, dating alla way back two decades ago to José Arguelles and his Harmonic Convergence, when the meme apparently first emerged. The article has a great way of treating the whole movement very seriously, while at the same time very clearly showcasing the absurdity inherent in any kind of end of the world scenario. My favorite quote, from John Major Jenkins, author of
Maya Cosmogenesis 2012: The True Meaning of the Maya Calendar End Date:
“A lot of people ask me if the world is going to end in 2012,” he said, “and I’ve come up with the best way to address that. The short answer is yes. The long answer is no.”
See, that's the kind of honesty the whole New Age could use.
