From Post: How does an alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet work, anyway?lj.,
There is this study that says that alcohol from vodka is not absorbed through the feet. [link] The key here is the detection limit that was used of 2.2 mmol/L (10 mg/100 mL). I think the SCRAM measures any amount of alcohol. And from: [link] , it seems as though skin contact can trigger a result in the SCRAM but that it can be distinguished from drinking the alcohol and won't be reported. "There are many substances containing alcohol (e.g., perfume, hand sanitizers) that can act as environmental interferants and produce a positive alcohol reading. As a preventive measure, offenders are instructed to avoid such substances and provided with a list of common product interferants. However, when offenders do come into contact with interfering substances, the alcohol curve that is generated assists trained AMS staff in identifying the source of the alcohol. Positive alcohol curves that are generated by interferants are often clearly distinguished from true positive alcohol curves that occur due to consumption, based on differences in absorption and burnoff rates. Talk to your P.O. about it. davey. : 2013-09-22 09:59:21
From Post: DoseNation 33: 25-i Bummer, Lucid DreamingI'd be interested to hear some backstory on Jake and James' relationship. How you ended up doing this cross-continental show. Jake's comment that he is no longer interested in psychedelics for himself got that train of inquiry rolling for me, not that it would necessarily be a major theme in whatever story you have. Now that I think of it, it would also be interesting to hear something of the behind the scenes process that brings us appreciative listeners the dosenation podcast.

From Post: DoseNation 33: 25-i Bummer, Lucid DreamingVery interesting talk. I'm also like you, James, in that I probably don't get enough deep sleep because I spend too much time in the REM state. I also get those "anti-social" visions you spoke and it's funny and a little bit of a synchronicity ;) you mentioned it because I had one just last night. Also, when you mentioned that book The Dream Drugstore, you said it was by Joseph LeDoux, I'm guessing you meant J. Allan Hobson since that's who appears to have actually written it, haha.
Oh and Jake asked a question "things start to come out of the silence, well where do they come from" around 53:20 and it seemed you like you totally did not answer him.

From Post: DoseNation 33: 25-i Bummer, Lucid DreamingGreat neuro-description of how the gates to the unconscious/ hippocampus are opened to the inspection of the PFC/ conscious ego for the purpose of higher neuro-plastic integration. This is of course the goal in psychotherapy. And this understanding answers Jake's question of why anyone would want to put themselves through such an ordeal. Ofcourse integration is not guaranteed, therefore the necessity of supportive set and setting. In my own explorations, I've integrated meditation practice with psychedelics, therefore experiencing full integration almost every trip, with a consequent sence of healing and expanded awareness. I feel there is a place for research chemicals, but for serious explorers of mind that have adequate training ; not for careless uninformed tripping just to 'trip out.' Just like climbing a new route on a mountain; you want to train (know meditation, visualization, breathing, lucid dreaming , astral projection, etc) and prepare (set and setting) before embarking on the journey. It is dangerous, it's not for everyone, but it's there. These are amazing potential tools; keys that unlock different brain-mind potentials that can allow us to become meta-programmers of our re-imprintable brains. Anyways, just some triggered thoughts. Great talk guys!

From Post: DoseNation 32: Free DabsOn the subject of "Molly"... a lot of the stuff I've tested using a test kit has come back as Methylone aka BK-MDMA which is essentially the cathinone version of mdma. Just replace the amphetamine with cathinone, similar to how mephedrone is supposed to be the cathinone substitute of meth-amphetamine . BK-MDMA is very similar in subjective effects compared to "real" mdma except the dose needed for effect is higher, slighty shorter peak and more stimulation on the come down.
I've heard Methylone refered to as mdma-lite. I think the electric zoo deaths could have been caused by methylone OD or its combination with real mdma which is probably a similar reaction to a pure mdma OD.
I've had great empathigenic experiences on bk-mdma and before I bought a test kit, believed what I had was super pure mdma.

From Post: How does an alcohol-monitoring ankle bracelet work, anyway? The podcast hosts are intelligent people. Many of the comments seem to come from intelligent people... maybe my bourgeois sensibilities are verging on flaming elitism, but come on people. This conversation is sad. Get your shit together!

From Post: Illusion: Are you right or left brained?Avecinna's (sic?) comment of 5 years ago is a good one. It points out (for me) two interesting things. Firstly, James' success with switching eyes points to the large component of belief or expectation in perception. Secondly it points out that a model doesn't have to be correct to be useful. Just look at newtonian mechanics or look further back to the tolmeic epicycles. These models work to make useful predictions, but they are not only an abstracted approximation, (as all models are) but even based on theories that have been replaced by better models. Anywho... I could best get her to switch directions by looking from a very oblique angle on my phone. Also, covering her upper body removed some visual cues that helped stabilize the perception. For the first few minutes, I too was frustrated and had a hard time believing it could turn any way other than clockwise. I then used all my mental powers to turn the lights on her so I could see more than the silhouette of this dancing nude beauty. No dice!

From Post: The Abbey - Jakes Experience at a Benedictine AbbeyThanks for sharing Jake...I once had a profound experience at a Benedictine monastery that may interest you. During my late teens and into my early twenties I was a full-on materialist-rationalist, fully immersed in the study of quantum physics and astrophysics while working for an engineering major in college. I had no need for some supernatural God that managed Earthly affairs from some throne in the gated-community of heaven. All religion, I thought, was a convoluted ploy to control the unthinking masses. Well, all that changed when I had my first full-blown mystical experience at a San Francisco rave in 1992. It was my first rave, and my first LSD experience. In the course of a night, I found a deep connection to the entire cosmos through the inner highways of my mind, finally melting into what felt like primordial Oneness; pure Consciousness that seemed to precede time, space, and matter. Anyhow, my major in college changed to psychology, with a minor in religious studies. I got into meditation practice and began cultivating the practice of Bare attention, or resting in what the Desert Fathers called "cloud of unknowing," the silence and stillness of deep Mind. Anyhow, while visiting my grandmother in Chile, she and I took our regular morning walk when suddenly we felt moved to enter the gates of a local Benedictine monastery, which normally was closed off to folks outside the order. We walked into the serene courtyard, no one there. My grandmother sat on a bench while I sat in the full-lotus position under a beautiful old tree. I entered what can only be described as pure formless Samadhi, absorbed into what appeared to my inner eye as radiant White Light (no psychedelics involved). We must of been there for five hours, as some monks approached us to let us know that they where closing the gates. To my astonishment, my grandmother too had entered into a deep trance, and she was no meditator; on the contrary, she was a very rational woman with no belief in a God. I never did return to the monastery, but have since done many ten-day silent meditation retreats, mostly vipassana mediation from the Buddhist tradition. My question has always been this: do we genuinely contact something like the Source, a Unified Field that is the Ground of all Being, or is it a mere electrical storm in our private neural wetware? Up until reading PIT and having subsequent exchanges with James, there was no question in my mind; only deep gnosis and cultivated experiences in that formless Ground (summed up in my new book Dimensions of Being). Now, at age forty, I am open to the dialogue, revisions in my thinking, and thirst for various data points that will reveal what and how this existence is all about. At the end of the day after thinking about all aspects of these questions, I sit quietly in front of a candle, thoughts slowing to a mere trickle, to finally awaken to the mysterious sentience underneath it all. Who or what IS this Sentience?
