Video: 'Bath Salts' on the Today Show

For those of you who missed it, this is a classic piece of paranoia press from Matt Lauer and NBC on the Today Show. Good thing underground chemists keep coming up with new legal highs, otherwise the press would have to stop running these cheesy drug packages. Your kids could be getting high on bath salts right now, or your parents, or your grandparents! Soon we will all be hallucinating and attacking each other with knives!

All these legal highs tend to be more harmful than the drugs they are meant to replace. Think synthetic cannabinoids vs. cannabis or mephedrone vs. amphetamines. That's how prohibition works. So it surprise me if those "bath salts" are quite bad shit. Snorting a substance with colorings - I've even heard of people who take this kind of drugs IV - also must mean some risks...
Anyway, I don't like the way these substances are called. Anyway, there are "real" bath salts which probably aren't psychoactive and aren't sold as grey-market drugs. Don't they - now, in this late phase of development of a legal-high market - have any clue what kind of substances these are? I also don't think they all work the same. Using the silly name puts a stigma on all those innocent cosmetic stores (not that I use bath salts myself, my skin doesn't tolerate such things ;)) and also perpetuates the harmful myth that DRUGS ARE (just) DRUGS and that knowing too much about them (such as distinguishing they don't have the same effects...) makes you suspicious.

PS. A little comment to mentalpyro's comment - a quote I like. From a MAPS forum discussion on the definition of LSD in a dictionary: "Based on the definition, you would never have guessed people took it voluntarily".

To be fair, my wife works in a psych ward here in Missouri and they have had several people come in thwacked out specifically on bath salts, like with full blown psychotic episodes. Not that I think a blanket ban is the best way to address that kind of situation, but the substances do seem to be kind of "unpredictable," at best.

"guns don't kill people" (who shoot themselves in the head). No, its the bath salts they snorted 5 days before. Obviously.

yes, because people only take drugs that do terrible terrible things to them, and for no reason. there is no way that anyone is experiencing any inkling of a pleasurable experience out of these and they are snorting them because they are simply possessed...
