NM state lawmaker wants to repeal medical marijuana program
| A New Mexico lawmaker is pushing to put an end to the state’s medical marijuana program. State Representative James Smith (R- Sandia Park) has introduced a bill that would repeal the entire program, if passed.
Rep. Smith, who is also a teacher, told KOB Eyewitness News 4 the program is sending the wrong message to children. “I’m compassionate about our most vulnerable citizens, our students. I believe it’s a disservice to our kids to tell them that something like marijuana is good for you. And I would like to see the law abolished,” Smith said.
Smith said the program needs to be shut down because medical marijuana is still considered illegal on the federal level. “From what I understand there are other alternatives. I’m not a medical doctor, I don’t pretend to be, I’ve done some research. Again, I’ll refer to the DEA website, which says there are other options available.”
Currently, New Mexico recognizes 15 conditions that can be treated with medical marijuana, including cancer, AIDS, and post-traumatic stress disorder.
