The Love Gov

We all like a little pill, occasionally. A gramme is better than a damn and all that. Sometimes, though, it's wiser to refrain than partake. As in the case of Matthew Chesher, who works for the Roads Minister in the Australian state of New South Wales. He got busted with a single tablet of MDMA. That's bad enough in New South Wales -- which has the toughest drug laws in Australia -- but what's worse is that his wife is the New South Wales Minister for um, errr... wait for it, kids... Education.

Needless to say, there were red faces all around:

My husband has admitted to making a very big mistake.

"He co-operated fully with the police, was charged and was released."

This morning he resigned his employment with immediate effect, she said.

"I am angry, hurt and very disappointed," she said.

Which sounds very much like a politician trying very hard to save her skin.

Way to support your husband there Verity. If I were him I'd dose the bitch with a couple of Es in her coffee as soon as possible.

Poor bastard. Besides losing his job and getting charged with a serious crime, he's got to smile and accept the humiliation willingly, lest it go worse for him.

Isn't it great when a happy citizen "admits to making a big mistake", then "cooperates fully with the police"? Gosh, if I ever made such a big mistake, I would also feel very sad I had offended the great people of South Wales, and totally cooperate with the police as they completely dismembered my life. I would happily resign from my elected position, plead guilty for the nice prosecutors so they don't have to go through the trouble of actually convicting me, then embrace whatever wise and just sentence the State imposes on me.

Remember kids, freedom is slavery! War is Peace! Everyone is free and happy in Australia! Er, except for the bad, sad people who get caught with a single ecstasy pill, but don't worry--the Law will put them right and make them happy again. After taking their job, family, money, and freedom away, anyway.

You're right, the article did only report his discussion of their legalisation. However the hypocrisy still remains in his case but not this case as in the former he is an enforcement agent while being against the war on drugs, whereas in the latter he is simply a Minister for Roads - he plays no role in supporting the war on drugs. That's why I wouldn't consider the two cases analogous.

But yes the laws ought to be repealed and entirely re-written, no doubt.

nope. jake, read it again. in which part of the article does it say he was using drugs? i'm under the impression he uses his brain and understands that US drug laws need to be repealed immediately.
Jake. : 2011-01-30 09:23:21
@slay

I think the key difference between these two situations, however, is that in one instance the man was enforcing drug laws while partaking in them, whereas in this case his job didn't revolve around enforcing the laws, so the hypocrisy isn't there.

yes i sympathize with the man, but as the article explicitly states, he made the unwise decision to "partake" and not refrain. given his social environment, i liken his experience to the border agent who got fired simply for talking about legalization..these people either need to smarten up and increase the paranoia, or just stop using drugs. simple as that.

The most horrible part of this is everyone's recognition that it's so horrible. The boss doesn't want to let him go; the wife doesn't want to make a public apology; the man just wants to take his fucking E in peace, but Some Assholes won't let anyone get away with it.

Poor guy, losing his career over something so trivial.
