DEA moves 5-MeO-DMT to Schedule I

Effective Date: January 19, 2011.

SUMMARY: With the issuance of this final rule, the Deputy Administrator of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) places the substance 5- methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT), including its salts, isomers and salts of isomers whenever the existence of such salts, isomers, and salts of isomers is possible, into schedule I of the Controlled Substances Act (CSA). This action by the DEA Deputy Administrator is based on a scheduling recommendation from the Assistant Secretary for Health of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) and a DEA review indicating that 5-MeO-DMT meets the criteria for placement in schedule I of the CSA. This final rule will impose the criminal sanctions and regulatory controls of schedule I substances under the CSA on the manufacture, distribution, dispensing, importation, exportation, and possession of 5-MeO-DMT.

[Thanks Tom!]

This is ridiculous. Basically over the years the DEA has overstepped its bounds again and again... this is yet another example. The analogue act shows their hipocracy. Morphine should have no medical value according to their scheduling system. I mean its medical heroin, for ***** sake. but because there was a patent and some rich bitch is making money off of it, its legal. How many people die of cigarettes and alcohol, i mean really for a substance that hasn't killed anybody (to my knowledge) this is utterly ridiculous. Its like MJ being schedule 1 it just doesn't make any sense. If the gov stopped telling me what to do with my mind and body i will respect their laws. but until then its my right to fight these laws and disobey them because i believe they are unjust. ****** the DEA and their silly laws.

@Greg

Yeah, and that happened to marijuana (cannabinoids) how long ago? That's released naturally in your brain.

Also, MDMA? pure MDMA is a serotonin releasing agent... serotonin occurs naturally in your brain...

I'm just pissed off that a board of old men can tell me what i CAN and CANNOT put in my body. what gives them the right? I own my body, they do not. If I choose to put something in it, its MY FUCKING CHOICE!

No psychedelic should be schedule I because schedule I means NO MEDICAL USES and there's a myriad of beneficial effects and very minimal to null long term physical effects. Safer than aspirin. But the DEA has too much power. Checks and balances don't exist anymore. The DEA acts as the judicial and the executive branches. Not to mention FREEDOM OF RELIGION

"What sort of evidence suggests this?
I'm not contending the point, just interested."

A good place to start would be Ronald Siegle's Intoxication: The Universal Drive for Mind-Altering Substances. He's a researcher at UCLA, and he's studied this pretty extensively.

I'd just like to let you know they just made a chemical illegal which occurs naturally in your brain

Well as far as any evidence can be formed for saying something about human nature, I think we can see that humanity from the beginning always has had a great interest in changing states of consciousness. You could take that history (check out McKenna's food of the gods) to mean either that trying to get to the other side is a natural thing for us humans to do, or you'll have to conclude there's some huge virus slipped into humanity (reeeal early) which makes us want to leave our 'perfect' everyday-consciousness in order to get heavily dillusional and skip work.

"While all research points to the fact that altering consciousness is a pretty basic human need"

What sort of evidence suggests this?

I'm not contending the point, just interested.

"Do they plan on banning every psychoative discovered?"

For the ones that aren't patentable, I'd say yes, that's more-or-less the intention.

While all research points to the fact that altering consciousness is a pretty basic human need (and extends even to many of our brethren in the animal kingdom), it is not considered a worthwhile or valid pursuit by the governments of the world. This is, of course, a very big disconnect between reality and projection, but it's what we have.

I read the emergency scheduling paperwork when it was first enacted, and given the axioms and assumptions of the "powers that be," it was an entirely logical and self-consistent document, and the eventual scheduling was inevitable. By definition 5-MEO and related compounds have no valid use (i.e., all use is defined as abuse), and when you weigh the risks (and all substances have risks) against the benefits (defined as null), the calculus of prohibition will always taketh, but never giveth.

the drug war is heating up. The question is, are they insidious, or just ignorant?
