Why intelligent people use more drugs

The human consumption of psychoactive drugs, such as marijuana, cocaine, and heroin, is of even more recent historical origin than the human consumption of alcohol or tobacco, so the Hypothesis would predict that more intelligent people use more drugs more frequently than less intelligent individuals...

Given their extremely recent origin and thus evolutionary novelty, the Hypothesis would predict that more intelligent individuals are more likely to consume all types of psychoactive drugs than less intelligent individuals. Once again, as with alcohol consumption, the fact that the consumption of psychoactive drugs has largely negative health consequences and few (if any) benefits of any kind is immaterial to the Hypothesis. It does not predict that more intelligent individuals are more likely to engage in healthy and beneficial behavior, only that they are more likely to engage in evolutionarily novel behavior.

"the fact that the consumption of psychoactive drugs has largely negative health consequences and few (if any) benefits of any kind is immaterial to the Hypothesis"

This is no fact.
The author should read a bit about psychedelic therapy, which has helped thousands of people. Or about pain management (also done with psychoactive drugs, the opiates).... Or about all the people who have opened up emotionally on Ecstasy, maybe met the love of their life, with no bad consequences at all.

This is so lame, this endlessly repeated statement, that "drugs" are useless and bad for you.
Supposedly because they are illegal... While the same or very similar drugs, if prescribed by doctors, are means of healing - what logic is this?

The author should also do some reading on the history of the illegality of drugs. Which has very little to do with them being so especially bad or dangerous. It's all politics, financial interests, cultural and religious intolerance and so on. Very little rational anything.

I would not get angry about this statement, if some Mr. Smith who only knows about drugs from the TV told me. But what on Earth is it doing at Psychology Today ?

I'm sure everyone here knows about it, but Terence McKenna speculated in his book _Food of the Gods_ that psychedelics (Psilocybe cubensis) might have played an important role in the evolution of our species towards its modern intelligent status.

The "agricultural" part should be emphasized more if they are to make that claim.

My second mushrooms trip openned by eyes and now I see to be able to think above everyone elses's level. I dont get sucked into my emotions and am able to stay calm in bad situations. I am able to see both sides of a given story without being biased towards one side.

On a side note the trip also flared an interest in me with the brain and how it works with different substances.

I really dont see any harm that was done.

"Opium and cannabis are the only “natural” (agricultural) psychoactive drugs."

Huh?

How many psychoactive plants and fungi can YOU name? I can think of a dozen that probably or certainly have a history of use of at least 1000 years without breaking a sweat.

Or maybe because it's an intelligent thing to do ... duh ...
