The Year on Drugs 2009

StopTheDrugWar.org weighs in with its top ten drug stories of the year, including mainstreaming marijuana, Sally D, the Mexican drug war, and more.

As 2009 prepares to become history, we look back at the past year's domestic drug policy developments. With the arrival of a highly popular (at least at first) new president, Barack Obama, and Democratic Party control of the levers of power in Congress, the drug reform gridlock that characterized the Bush years is giving way to real change in Washington, albeit not nearly quickly enough. A number of this year's Top 10 domestic drug stories have to do with the new atmospherics in Washington, where they have led, and where they might lead.

Thanks Jonathan!

i hate to be a nay sayer but I've seen this before when our country was one signature away from legalized marijuana and was bullied out of the decision by the American government and the conservative party in Canada. While we have had some real change here including one heroin maintenance program and we are awaiting another,it's all due to a supreme court decision that ousted Canadian drug laws until they could be rewritten. Our current government is virulently anti drug and is responsible for the ending of many of our most progressive works.Lets hope the coming changes in your government won't end the current move towards real drug reform,as you are the country at the controls of this drug war.Changes in the Amerikan drug scene would be the first move towards real change in our country. We still seem to be the tail on the US dog.
